Hey! Welcome to Capri4Physio, we have a new course on Manual Therapy Shoulder Joint which will help you to reduce pain and stiffness caused due to mechanical pain

Shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints of the body. However, this amount of mobility comes at the cost of stability. Less stability makes it a target of various musculoskeletal conditions like instability, dislocation/ subluxation, tendinitis, impingement, arthritis, adhesive capsulitis, strain, weakness of rotator cuff muscles etc. Also, it’s a very large joint and falling on an outstretched hand pertains it to sustain major injuries and fractures instantly. Even amongst the sports people, shoulder injuries are common due to overuse, wrong technique of hand maneuvers or due to on-field injuries. Not only amongst sports players, but musculoskeletal conditions like frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries/ weakness make it difficult to perform the activities of daily living like dressing up, pulling/pushing a door, sleeping on the affected shoulder, overhead motions; ultimately disturbing the normal routines of sedentary people. Therefore, role of a physiotherapist essentially comes into play in treating this highly mobile joint.

This chapter explains and demonstrates the mobilisation techniques of shoulder joint that help to relieve pain, increase range of motion, improve the activities of daily living, and improve the quality of life of people suffering from shoulder problems. It consists of all the techniques: sustained/ oscillatory passive accessory glides with/ without motion. All the techniques demonstrated are the best of manual therapy techniques which have been chosen and picked by Capri over the last 28 years by treating almost a lakh of patients.

The uniqueness of shoulder joint is that the shoulder complex not only consists of the glenohumeral jint (commonly, called as shoulder joint), but also the acromioclavicular joint, sternoclavicular joint and the scapulothoracic joint. It is important to know that only treating or mobilising the glenohumeral is not adequate for treatment of shoulder conditions. Along with glenohumeral, it is imperative that mobilisation of AC, SC and ST Joint is done in conjunction to bring the best results to the patient. Therefore, this chapter covers all the mobilisations of all these four joints, to bring about a comprehensive approach in treating shoulder conditions.

Manual Therapy Shoulder Joint

All these techniques will help to treat shoulder pain, due to AC Joint arthritis, glenohumeral pathology (if nt contraindicated), positional fault of shoulder etc. These techniques are also indicated to treat rotator cuff strain, deltoid strain, deltoid weakness, rotator cuff weakness, periarthritis. These are also helpful in post-traumatic pain and stiffness of shoulder like FOOSH injury, or fractures of humerus, post operative conditions of shoulder joint, like adhesiolysis, rotator cuff repair, bankart’s lesion, labrum tears, shoulder arthroplasty (with precautions) and other various conditions.

To have a strong structure, it is important to have a strong foundation and this chapter deals with building a strong foundation of manual therapy of knee. A good foundation is fundamental to developing new techniques, understanding the rationale behind each technique and effective delivery of manual therapy techniques. These in turn lead to more successful clinical outcomes, faster recovery of the patient and of course, more job satisfaction. It’s a win-win situation for both the therapist and the patient. Therefore, this chapter explains in detail, what is manual therapy of shoulder joint, why is it so important, how to be applied, when to be applied, when not to be applied, what are the tools for manual therapy, how to use them, what are the principles of manual therapy. A comprehensive and in-depth understanding of all these things builds a successful clinical foundation and stimulates the young minds of therapists to treat the knee joint in the most efficient manner.

All participants will gain an understanding of the basics of manual therapy and best of different manual concepts, as well as modified osteopathic and chiropractic techniques. The participant will have enhanced assessment skills when examining knee joint. As with all manual techniques, handling skills are paramount, and at the end of the program, the true professional will be able to assess the condition and deliver the manual treatment with great expertise. The most important outcome is that patients will benefit the most from this integrated approach.

At the completion of the chapter, the participant should:

1. Be competent in formulating differential diagnosis based on the integrated neuromusculoskeletal examination, clinical reasoning & evidence-based practice.

2. Be adept in formulating the most suitable manual therapy protocol/technique that is tailored according to the individual needs of the patient.

3.Be expert in delivering the manual therapy treatment of shoulder joint.

4.Be capable of assessing the accuracy and reliability of the treatment technique / protocol used on the patient using his manual therapy assessment skills.

To make it simple and easy to understand, funny analogies and anecdotes have been used so that the concept and the topic is imprinted at the back of your minds and you all can easily retain and remember it without much efforts.
